In 2009, Don Yanek (drums) offered to help Al Hennagir (guitar) set up a cheap drum set in his basement. After a quick tune-up, they bashed out a few Feelies covers to test out the kit. Don apparently liked what he heard—a week later he set up his ’60s Ludwig Champagne Sparkle kit in Al’s basement. It’s been there ever since.
Eventually Al convinced Don to recruit Erik Trojnar (Swedish Cowboys, Avocet) to sit in on bass. Turns out he too shared a love for The Feelies, The Vulgar Boatmen, Neil Young, The Meat Puppets, and Yo La Tengo. They also share an affinity for smoked meats, fancy beer and cheap beer. They dubbed themselves The Purcells and played gigs at Schuba’s Tavern, Cole’s, Lizard’s Liquid Lounge, Abbey Pub, and lots of summer BBQs.
In late 2012, The Purcells recorded their first EP, Birches, in Al’s basement. The EP was mixed by Pat Stolley (futureappletree) and mastered by Mike Hagler (Kingsize Soundlabs). In early 2016, the lads released Indian Hill, their contribution to a limited edition split 7-inch record with Chicago rock stalwarts I Lost Control.
The Purcells released their debut album, Words Can't Say, in December 2016. The album is currently available digitally on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and elsewhere. A limited edition vinyl pressing was released in spring 2017, and is available on Bandcamp, select independent record stores, and live performances.
